West End Library Friends


Your Library Needs You! Is more than just a catchy phrase, it is a call to arms.  Patron usage of libraries is down nationally due to the pandemic.  But now it is time to turn the tide.

The West End Library Friends is a 501c(3) committed to supporting a dynamic and revitalized branch that serves the current needs and expectations of the community, by supporting services and programs at the library and providing assistance to branch staff and patrons. The Friends was incorporated in 1990 as a non-profit organization. All dues and donations to the Friends are fully deductible.

The Friends provide volunteer support for the branch and the library system in areas such as public awareness, advocacy, and community outreach. During the current membership year, the Friends have provided resources to the branch and the D. C. Public Library for various programs and activities, including:

•         Discover Summer, a summer reading program for all ages

•         Professor Ori Soltes Book Discussion Series

•         Children's Reading and Play Programs

•         Supporting the branch enrichment fund to help finance programs for branches that do not have community resources 

    Ellie Becker Education Award & Marching Contribution
     In 2019, WELF established an award of up to $1,000 a year from the Ellie Becker Education Award Fund for the training of a member or members of the West End Library staff. We have received a generous offer from a donor to contribute matching funds collected for the Ellie Becker Award Fund. Please consider an additional donation so that we can take advantage of this dollar for dollar match.

Or drop it off at the library circulation desk in a sealed envelope labeled "West End Library Friends."
